Kurt Ellenberger, assistant professor of music and head of Jazz Studies at GVSU, will be featured in a Local Composers Concert at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts.
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, December 8, at the UICA, 41 Sheldon Blvd. SE in Grand Rapids. Performing his compositions will be Ellenberger, on piano, accompanied by a dozen other musicians, most of them from the GVSU Music Department.
The pieces featured are varied, said Ellenberger. It's all in a chamber music setting, but it runs the gamut from trumpet trio to a large chamber piece for string quartet, French horn, narrator and jazz piano trio.
Each year, UICA chooses composers to showcase in its Local Composers Concert. Of the four selected this year, three have GVSU connections: Ellenberger, Chin-Chin Chen, director of the GVSU Music Technology Center, and Jason Allen, a GVSU music student.
Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 for students/UICA members. Call 454-7000 for more information.
