Festival Underway

Experience Shakespeare outdoors in Grand Valley's scenic arboretum and nature trails as the Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company comes to the Allendale campus for three performances.

Love's Labor's Lost

spins a hilarious and occasionally heartbreaking yarn as four men commit to monastic lives just as four engaging young women enter their lives. Set amid the refined elegance and gracious romanticism of a country estate, this battle of the sexes is fun-filled with two hundred and forty puns and quibbles, and a gaggle of low-comedy clowns thrown into the mix for good measure!

Chicago producer-director Frank Farrell brings his unique vision of the Bard's plays to Festival audiences this fall. Critically acclaimed for his work at Chicago's Equity Library Theatre, Frank is noted for his innovative Shakespearean productions in the Chicago Botanic Gardens, Lake Cook Hiking Trails and other outdoor venues. Here in West Michigan, Frank's Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company stages productions in the forested parks of Holland Township with local casts.

At Friday night's performance of Love's Labor's Lost, Frank invites audiences to pull up their beach chairs in the University's pleasant arboretum, and enjoy nature and the Bard as twilight falls. His whimsical hiking version of play the next day leads audiences down the arboretum's paths to various stages, where actors present the scenes of Shakespeare's play.

In fact, visitors to GVSU's annual Family Day festivities on September 23 can easily combine their visit with an afternoon matinee or twilight performance of Love's Labor's Lost. The Pigeon Creek Shakespeare is quickly catching on with hikers and nature lovers, as well as Shakespeare enthusiasts and family groups.
