About 100 8th graders from three West Michigan school districts spent Monday on the Allendale Campus to get a firsthand idea of what college is all about.
Students from City Middle School in Grand Rapids, and Jenison and Allendale middle schools took part in GVSU College Day. Their schedules included a class session in one of nine subjects, a visit to university housing, a tour of the Field House, lunch in the Food Court, and a walk around campus.
We polled the kids in advance and assigned them to a schedule that fit their interests, said Stephen Ward, director of University Communications. The first purpose of this event is to encourage middle school students to start thinking about what it will take to prepare for college. Plus, we'd like these area kids to get to know our campus as a fun place to visit and just hang out.
