Prof Wins Book Honor

Choice Magazine has named a book by a Grand Valley State University history professor as one of its Outstanding Academic Titles for 1999.

The Seed Was Planted: The Sao Paulo Roots of Brazil's Rural Labor Movement, 1888-1988

by Cliff Welch, was published earlier this year by Pennsylvania State University Press. The book asserts that rural labor has been fundamental to the development of modern Brazil.

Welch specializes in Brazilian history and coordinates GVSU's Latin American Studies Program.

The Latin American Studies Program at Grand Valley State University and the Grand Rapids Community Media Center are sponsoring Brazil99! this Saturday, from noon to 10 p.m. at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts. The festival features a dozen Brazilian-made videos, a dance workshop and panel discussion, Brazil's national dish feijoado, and the Oscar-nominated feature film Central Station.
