Project Horseshoe Farm

Horseshoe Farm offer gap year (13 month) Fellowships for top graduating college students (or recent college graduates) interested in learning about community health leadership, participating in innovative approaches to improving local health and education systems, and contributing to broader strengths in local communities. All majors and backgrounds are eligible to apply!  Accepted Fellows receive free housing, an educational grant (site dependent), and valuable experience through:

  • Participation in Horseshoe Farm's innovative approaches to improving health, education, and community health systems; Work supporting health providers, teachers, and other community leaders;
  • Direct work with seniors, adults living with mental illness, and children; Close work and collaboration with a team of other talented Fellows;
  • First hand exposure to health systems, to health policy, and to community health in action;
  • Direct experience impacting social determinants of health and learning about the biopsychosocial model;
  • Experience with operations in a community based non-profit organization; Community Engagement work in support of other civic, business, non-profit, and governmental organizations throughout the community and other opportunities to get to know their local community;
  • Ongoing mentorship and teaching and weekly readings and discussions.

Fellows consistently go on to some of the top medical, nursing, public health, health management, and education programs in the nation and several have received the most prestigious scholarships and awards at their respective institutions. 

For the coming gap year, NOTE THESE DEADLINES:

Priority Deadline: late October

Second Deadline: mid-January

Final Deadline: Mid-March (rolling admissions after Jan 18, as space allows)

Note: For the Fellowship, we strongly encourage applying for the Priority or Second Deadline as spots may fill before the Final deadline..

Also accepting applications for Internships for Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Benefits: 

To help Fellows partially offset educational costs related to their year of volunteer service and learning, Horseshoe Farm provides shared housing and utilities free of charge to Fellows (approximate value of $7,200 - $12,000/year, depending on location) and an educational grant/transportation reimbursement (total of $880-$1115/month**) that is intended to help Fellows partially offset other basic living costs and their significant transportation costs related to the Fellowship. Finally, we are able to provide a small relocation grant to each Fellow to help partially offset their costs of moving ($100-$300 depending on distance).
