Pamela Harriman Fellowship

The Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship Award provides funding to support mentoring and professional development activities post-internship to extend students’ knowledge and skills in public service and diplomacy. At least four awards will be presented each year with the exact award amounts depending on the projects proposed in the student applications. Typical awards will be $5,000. State Department interns will be eligible to apply for a Harriman fellowship without regard to the geographic location in which they serve. Fellowships will be awarded to undergraduate students.

The Fellowships are open to students who:

  • Are a student from any university in the United States who is chosen by the Department of State for internships through the U.S. Foreign Service Internship Program (USFSIP)
  • Are a William & Mary student who is part of the Student Internship Program (SIP.) They will select a student from the SIP in years when there are no W&M students who are part of the USFSIP program
  • Are U.S. Citizens
  • Are enrolled as sophomores continuing on to their junior year or juniors continuing on to their senior year of college
  • Show evidence of substantial scholarly research and/or creative projects
  • Show evidence of leadership, public service, and commitment to community
  • Demonstrate an excellent academic record.
  • Obtain an institutional endorsement from candidate's college/university.
  • Obtain strong, detailed letters of recommendation: two total, at least one of which is from faculty who have taught the student.
