Allendale Campus
Alumni, Community, Faculty, Staff, Students

In the 1990s, a small group of Chicano/Latino students went up against Michigan State University and won. They organized and fought for representation in the school's curriculum, culture, and public spaces, ultimately leading to the formation of MSU's Chicano/Latino Studies program. Join us on Thursday, October 20, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm in room 148 of the Niemeyer Learning & Living Center to view a documentary chronicling these efforts and the students who made it happen.

Dr. Ernesto Mireles, Xicano Studies and Community Organizing faculty at Prescott University, is coming to GVSU to screen “War of the Flea: The Fight for Xicano Studies ” and answer questions following the documentary. This is one of very few films that addresses the history of the Chicano/Latino community in Michigan.

This screening is hosted by the Latin American and Latino/a Studies program, the Kutsche Office of Local History, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and Dr. Ernesto Todd Mireles.
