The interdisciplinary humanitarian initiative facilitates an environment for students to learn, reflect, and act on humanitarian crises. It is centered on the discernment of individual and collective responsibilities to respond to humanitarian needs wherever they arise. The project grounds students in self-reflection, moral commitment, and politically informed action. It complements students fields of study with the concepts, theories, and competencies to alleviate suffering and protect human dignity and justice. The vocation of civic engagement and humanitarianism and the norms that undergird them are highly congruent with the core mission of Grand Valley State University as a liberal arts institution. Some of the fundamental goals of the organization are to critically engage with the current refugee crisis and the urgent social challenges tied with the inclusion of forcefully displaced people in our society, produce a range of curriculum and media tools that would facilitate and translate academic engagement into concrete civic and humanitarian action, work on various humanitarian community projects within our community and abroad, and raise awareness among students and general public about pressing social and global justice issues. We envision a possible collaboration with other universities in this sector. Locally, we have already established connections with Bethany Refugee and Immigrant Services, Samaritas, the Refugee Education Center, and hope to expand our network to other similar organizations and enthusiasts.
