Lecture by Robert Terrill

"DIRT SPEECH AND DECORUM"

Drawing on Mary Douglas’s seminal concept of “dirt” as “matter out of place,” this presentation defines and examines a rhetorical strategy that exposes how discourse and action are strategically framed as “out of place.”

About the speaker: Robert E. Terrill, Professor of Rhetoric in the Department of English at IU Bloomington and PhD graduate of Northwestern University, advances a dynamic practice of rhetorical criticism devoted to inventing powerful discursive resources that equip individuals and communities to participate in civic culture.
