Special seminar: Michigan PFAS Awareness Week 2026

Seminar title: Understanding the Science, Risks, and the Power of Advocacy

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed September 2125 as PFAS Awareness Week, underscoring Michigans commitment to confronting PFAS contamination and protecting public health. PFAS are a large family of man-made chemicals used since the 1940s in products such as nonstick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, firefighting foam, and food packaging. They are called forever chemicals because they do not break down easily in the environment or in our bodies. Research has shown that exposure to PFAS can increase the risk of cancer, harm the liver and immune system, and affect child development. These chemicals move through air, water, and food, so nearly all of us carry measurable amounts in our blood. In Michigan, PFAS has contaminated drinking water supplies, rivers, and lakes, affecting communities, wildlife, and local economies. State and federal agencies are setting stricter limits for PFAS in water, but cleanup is challenging and costly. On the positive side, awareness is growing, safer alternatives are being developed, and communities are coming together to advocate for stronger protection. This presentation will discuss the history, toxicity, and fate and transport of PFAS in the environment. What individuals and environmental groups can do to address PFAS issues will also be covered. By staying informed and supporting solutions, we can reduce exposure and safeguard public health and our environment.
