Learn more about the GVSU Northern Ireland: Peace, Conflict, & Reconciliation (Psychology) - Summer 2027!

About the program:

While sharing much with its neighbor, the Republic of Ireland, the political, social and historical features of Northern Ireland make it a strikingly different place. These important features are the basis for exploration and analysis in the Peace, Conflict, and Reconciliation study abroad program. The program will begin in Belfast where students will attend classes on conflict transformation, peace, and reconciliation, visit local peace organizations, and volunteer at an elementary school. The group will then travel to Derry where we'll study the civil rights history of Northern Ireland and visit local organizations engaged in reconciliation work. There will also be a number of cultural and site seeing excursions in Derry and Belfast, in Donegal, and on the northern coast.

Highlights:

  • Travel throughout Northern Ireland, learning about the psychology of conflict, peace, and reconciliation with a focus on the 20th century
    conflict known as The Troubles
  • Visit non-profit organizations to learn about their peace-building work, and hear from academic speakers with expertise and experience in
    reconciliation.
  • Field trips include a trip to Donegal and visits to Giants Causeway, Carrick-a-rede, and Dunluce Castle
