A Closer Look at Experiential Philanthropy
Experiential philanthropy is an increasingly popular pedagogic strategy not only for teaching students about giving but also for allowing students an opportunity to cultivate and practice their own habits of giving.
To support these initiatives, a number of foundations across the United States (e.g., the Learning by Giving Foundation, the Once Upon a Time Foundation) have begun directing funding specifically to colleges and universities for the purpose of engaging students in experiential philanthropy — i.e., allowing students an opportunity to philanthropically distribute this funding to nonprofit organizations.
This session will explore what we are learning about experiential philanthropy from two researchers who have both taught and studied it.
Join us to explore:
- The role of experiential philanthropy courses in higher education
- What students take away from these courses
- Pedagogic approaches used
- The role of recent critiques in shaping how we teach philanthropy
