Marty Litherland, Ph.D.

Dr. Marty Litherland offers her perspective and expertise on Lifelong Learning through her academic and lived experiences. She has traveled vast social distances using her gifts of connection and engagement. After a few years of coaching and teaching health and physical education at the elementary and secondary level, Marty Litherland moved to the college level as a professor and coach at Defiance College in Ohio. Her Division III teams in basketball did quite well with an overall winning percentage of over .750 and making it to the Elite Eight at the NCAA National Tournament. During her 17-year tenure at Defiance, she coached basketball, softball and volleyball. In addition to her coaching, she taught in the field of Health and Physical Education.
Marty went on to pursue a degree in Sport Psychology at Michigan State University, but never worked in that field. Upon completion of the Ph.D., she took a position with Grand Valley State University in administration and teaching. She was the Director of Regional Sites (Traverse City, Muskegon and Holland) as well as adjunct professor in the Teacher Education program. While at Grand Valley, she led a campus-wide initiative to better serve non-traditional students.
In her ninth year of retirement, Marty has served as a volunteer in biological research at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, as a coordinator at Benzie Area Christian Neighbors (a local food pantry and service center), and as a board member of the Advocates for Benzie County (a county-wide planning group). She is active in the Benzie County Unitarian Universalist church. In addition, she has focused on her woodworking skills, became the household expert in all things plumbing and electrical, and learned to play the ukulele.
She and her spouse live in Benzie County.
