Heartside Gleaning Food Rescue Volunteer opportunity

This opportunity is to help Heartside Gleaning in their food rescue program which refers to "rescue food" from the GR marathon and deliver this food to local soup kitchens and food pantries. This involves meeting at the David Huntington YMCA around 2:00 pm and spending the next 3-4 hours transporting rescued food from the marathon to local food soup kitchens and food pantries. VOLUNTEERS WILL NOT BE DRIVING, just helping pack and unpack the vans and riding along with members of Heartside Gleaning. We can set up a carpool to get to the YMCA. Check out their website if you are interested in learning more about what Heartside Gleaning does! http://www.heartsidegleaning.org/volunteer-form.html

Hunger and Homelessness is a student led service and advocacy volunteer organization at GVSU. We work with community agencies that, directly or indirectly, service those dealing with the realities of hunger and homelessness. We typically have 1 volunteer event every weekend, usually on Saturday mornings. Theses events take place at local agencies that target the hungry and homeless population within the community. For example, thrift stores, soup kitchens, food banks, and programs hosted by local churches. We carpool to and from campus for theses events, as we recognize that not all of our members are in a situation where they are able to have a car on campus. We have a general club meeting once a month to discuss past and future events. We have no dues and no minimum number of meetings or events that our members are required to attend. The Hunger and Homelessness Executive Board recognizes that our members have busy schedules, and we appreciate any amount of time a member is able to donate to our organization.

Additionally, promoting on-campus and community awareness of the lifestyles and experiences of this organization's target populations is also an important component to the purpose of this group. We believe that education is a key component to resolving the issue of hunger and homelessness throughout our community and neighboring communities.
