From the River to Your Cup: 5 Essential Backcountry Skills Plus 4 Ways to Make Your Coffee

Tuesday, February 2, 2021
3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Allendale Campus
Students

Having a hot beverage while out on an adventure can change your mood like your professor telling you that class is canceled for the day. This social event looks at some of the valuable outdoor basics through the exploration of making coffee 4 different ways. While out on a short on-campus hike, we’ll go through the aspects of dressing for the weather (layering), finding and collecting water, making it safe to drink (filtration & purification), heating it (stove use), and finally, as a group we’ll play with making coffee in the outdoors four different ways: French press, AeroPress, pour over, and “cowboy” coffee. Which way is the best? Grab a friend and find out for yourself!

Don’t like coffee? Don’t worry, we’ll be sure to have a small supply of tea and cocoa.

The Outdoor Adventures program will provide all the necessary equipment from our inventory. If you have an insulated mug, please bring it so we can minimize the amount of waste we create. If you also have new gear you want to practice with, feel free to bring that too! This program will be outside so dress appropriately. Masks and social distancing are a requirement. We'll discuss other pertinent backcountry safety protocol as we go. Registration required for planning purposes.
