Alumni, Students

Please join us for this half-hour Faculty & Advisor Briefing for the Boren Scholarship and Boren Fellowship program, which supports students who seek immersive language study abroad and who have an interest in public service by providing significant support for intensive, long-term (preferably year-long) study abroad focused upon less-commonly taught languages of critical interest to the United States.

Do you work with students who are curious about fellowship opportunities leading to a career focused on using their language skills and/or intercultural communication skills in the intelligence and security fields within the US government (across many different agencies and departments, at home and abroad)? This is an extraordinary opportunity for students who are exploring (or already deeply interested in) federal service at the intersection of language study, intercultural understanding, and a wide variety of specific disciplines.

The Boren Awards program welcomes applications from majors in the social sciences and humanities and has a preferential option for STEM majors. Boren Award recipients receive mentoring, preferential consideration for federal employment, and cultivation into long-term careers across federal agencies.

National deadlines for the 2022 Boren Awards are: Boren Fellowships (grads): January 26, 2022 at 5:00 pm EST and Boren Scholarships (undergrads): February 2, 2022 at 5:00 pm EST

For more Information about Boren possibilities and application procedures

  • Explore the Boren Awards website
    • Search our Eligible Countries page to see where the Boren may take you
    • Search our Eligible Languages page to see the many languages available for study with Boren funding (and note that the Boren Awards program *does not* require prior knowledge of most of these languages – IIE understands that these languages are seldom offered at universities! That’s why Boren funding is available!
    • Search our Eligible Fields of Study to see the many disciplines Boren funding supports (and note that only STEM majors are eligible for summer awards in addition to the longer study-abroad awards)
Explore the Selecting an Eligible Study Program to learn more about which study-abroad programs are eligible for support
    • Visit the Webinars and Resources page to learn more about next steps
