Nathan Spix is an MD-PhD candidate in the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSU CHM)/Van Andel Institute physician-scientist training program. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Oakland University, where he discovered an interest in research working in the retinal physiology laboratory of Dr. Dao-Qi Zhang. He completed his PhD in the lab of Dr. Peter Laird at the Van Andel Institute, where his studies focused on mapping and understanding epigenetic heterogeneity in normal tissue and during tumor growth and evolution. He is currently completing his training at MSU CHM, with the goal of pursuing a career in medical oncology practice and research. He will discuss his research journey and the factors which led him to pursue dual-degree training, as well as presenting highlights of his PhD work. These include single-cell DNA methylation studies, spatial and temporal reconstruction of DNA methylation in human tumor samples, and recent work involving large-scale analysis of public DNA methylation datasets leveraging large language models.
