Sean J Patrick Carney will discuss how his landscape-based writing and studio practices have evolved over the past three years as the Padnos Distinguished Artist-in-Residence in the Department of Visual and Media Arts. Between academic semesters, Carney embarked on meandering road trips back and forth between Michigan and his home in Berkeley, California, visiting a number of significant sites in the Intermountain West ranging from clandestine military bases, to canonical works of land art, to 19th-century overland emigration routes. His field research resulted in essays and articles for ArtforumHigh Country NewsArt in America, and Glasstire, as well as a science fiction novella, BACK\SLASHER, and a suite of experimental drawings. Carney will share images and stories from more than 30,000 miles on the road, recount his original residency project idea, and look towards future iterations of the lines of inquiry he initiated while at Grand Valley State University.
