New Faculty: Kayla Wheeler

Kayla Wheeler joins GVSU as an Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Digital Studies. She received her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Iowa. She also holds an M.A. in Religious Studies from the University of Iowa, an M.A. in Islam and the West from Queen Mary, University of London and an M.A. in Bioethics from Case Western Reserve University. Her research interests include Islam in the Americas, Islam and gender, digital identity, religion and media, material religion, and Black performativity. She is currently conducting research for a book tentatively titled, "Fashioning Black Islam." She also curates #BlackIslamSyllabus.
She will be teaching courses in African American Studies and Digital Identities and Communities in the Digital Studies minor.
