Social Justice Begins with ME! youth reading program

Police violence against Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) has continued across the country. Record numbers of people have been displaced due to violence, poverty, and natural disasters. The “Me Too” movement has brought the abuse of power into the spotlight. These injustices have ushered in a new urgency for coming together across communities to stand up for fairness. How do we include children in these difficult conversations? Caregivers need guidance toward effective ways to talk to children about issues of social justice. Engaging in these conversations with children requires acknowledging personal discomfort and fear, and willingness to not have all the answers. Social Justice Begins with ME! (SJBM) is a community-based, social justice-rooted reading program that provides space for children and their caregivers to explore their own positionalities, learn, and grow together. SJBM was developed in 2018 by Grand Valley State University’s (GVSU) School of Social Work for children ages 4-11 and is implemented in partnership with the Grand Rapids Public Library (GRPL). The program brings children, their caregivers, and undergraduate/graduate social work students and practitioners together to read, talk about, and explore books rooted in social justice themes, including race, equity, and inclusion. Entering these important conversations through books encourages dialogue, investigates thinking, and supports growth aimed at social justice understanding and advocacy. Visuals will demonstrate the techniques and materials used in this collaborative program.
