What is your current job and what do you find exciting about it?

Being a Documentary Standard Scientist at the United States Pharmacopeia, I thrive in facilitating global public health by developing standards for medicines in collaboration with expert committees, pharmaceutical companies, and the FDA. I diligently work to ensure our contributions to the pharmacopeia appropriately reflect the pharmaceutical landscape and quality expectations, since regulators in over 140 countries recognize and enforce USP’s trusted standards. Effectuating high quality medicines across the globe and to the patients that need them is a rewarding career.

How did your GVSU Chemistry/Biochemistry degree help you prepare you for the work that you do?

Conducting research in Dr. Matchett’s lab and leading “Structured Learning Assistance” classes propelled me well past graduation day, through two years of quality control work in pharma, and into my PhD work at the University of Notre Dame. I now work with a diverse body of international scientists responsible for medicines. These achievements are due to a strong foundation in chemistry fundamentals (from the department’s curriculum and research experience) and in soft skills (from teaching).
