What is your current position and what do you find exciting about it?

I am currently a resident physician in the internal medicine/physician-scientist training program at the University of Michigan. I completed my MD/PhD at Wayne State University studying mitochondrial biochemistry before matching at UofM. My research interests lie in how cancer cells undergo metabolic reprogramming and how that can be targeted to treat cancer and prevent metastases. I enjoy being able to treat patients every day while still being on the cutting edge of medical advancement. As a resident physician, I'm still in training to be a full fledged physician-scientist, but I enjoy learning something new every day about the human body!

How did your GVSU Chemistry/Biochemistry degree help you prepare for your position?

The skills I developed during my chemistry degree at GVSU were instrumental for both my MD and PhD. Having a strong foundation in cellular biology and biochemistry helped tremendously with the transition to medical school and more recently into residency. The technical skills I developed during my time at GVSU, such as purification, spectroscopy, and kinetics among many others, were all extremely useful for my PhD.
