Biros lab has collaborative grant with University of Tampa

Professors Shannon Biros of the Department of Chemistry at Grand Valley State University and Eric Werner of the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics at The University of Tampa received a grant from the National Science Foundation to introduce students to inorganic chemistry research.  Biros, Werner and their students are developing a series of metal chelating agents for binding to f-elements, including the valuable rare earth metals. Application in modern technologies including electric car batteries, medical diagnostic agents, and advanced optical materials has increased the need for more efficient acquisition of rare earth elements from both raw sources and as recycled metals from consumer products.  Over the course of this three-year project, 15 undergraduate students, including three community college students, will be trained in a broad range of areas including organic synthesis, inorganic coordination chemistry, luminescence, and analytical chemistry. Professors Biros and Werner will also work to develop the students’ communication skills through internal and external conference presentations and will continue their commitment to supporting students in their labs who are from groups typically underrepresented in the sciences.
