Professors Hawk, Leonard and BIC major publish in BBRC
Professors Laura Hawk, Dave Leonard and Biochemistry major Oliver Reyes recently published a paper in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications. The paper was titled "Ligand binding to the class D β-lactamase OXA-66 detected by NMR after 19F-labeling of tryptophan residues". In this study, the authors examined how a bulky tryptophan residue (W222) detects ligand binding in the β-lactamase OXA-66, finding that this residue influences inhibitor binding and limits enzyme activity, as shown by 19F NMR and increased activity when W222 was replaced with a smaller amino acid.
