GVSU hosts Molecular Minds Camp

This past summer GVSU Chemistry faculty and students hosted a Molecular Minds Camp for local high school students.  Students learned to pipet with serological and auto pipettors, explored the kinetics of yeast decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, extracted and analyzed caffeine from 5-Hour Energy drinks, explored marker inks via chromatography, and synthesized and analyzed aspirin. The presented their results to faculty, friends, and family during a poster session on the last day of camp. Professor Josie Mitchell helped secure funding ($3500) from the ACS to support the camp so that it could be offered free to area students. Professors Stephanie Schaertel, Kayla Van Kampen and Julie Henderleiter organized the recruiting of local high school students and prepared advertising materials and activities, while Michelle DeWitt handled supplies. Student volunteers Lily Sorensen, Brianna Rhodea, and Brianna Becksvoort supported students and spoke with them about what college was like. GVSU graduate Carter Tomko shared information about what to do with a chemistry degree and the benefits of the ACS.  Additional thanks to Aramark for donating lunches and to the Chemistry Department for donating chemicals and lending materials for the camp
