Description

Join the NOAA Planet Stewards Education Project , NOAA’s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC) for a two day workshop highlighting hands-on programming and ideas for integrating climate and STEM resources into your classroom or informal science curriculum.

DAY ONE (Thurs, Nov 7) will take place at ALNC in Monona and feature interactive investigations and discussions about using Aldo Leopold and Nina Leopold Bradley's phenological data comparisons to examine historical data that helps illustrate climate change. Activities will range from measuring water quality as it relates to stormwater and precipitation trends to maple syruping and the impact of climate change on this industry. Connect the local to the global with resources you can access with your students in a classroom or other outdoor setting.

DAY TWO (Fri, Nov 8) will take place at CIMSS, on the UW-Madison campus, birthplace of satellite meteorology. Learn about the newest Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) and how to access and investigate satellite imagery. Participants will leave fully equipped to coach their students in a virtual science fair (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/education/goesr/vsf) this spring using satellite data to investigate weather and natural hazards. Science fair prizes for students  will include gift cards and official GOES launch viewing invitations (no travel support) at the Kennedy Space Center. Teachers coaching the winning teams will receive launch invitations and travel support to present at the 2020 American Meteorological Society Centennial meeting in Boston! Participating teachers will also receive a beautiful 4-season poster of Wisconsin. Attendance is limited and we recommend you sign up early!

Educators attending both days will receive certificates of completion to apply towards CEU credits.
