Campus Climate Incident Summaries

Grand Valley State University strives to create an inclusive and equitable campus community where people are treated with dignity and respect. As such, we take seriously our responsibility to track and provide educational responses to campus climate concerns. What follows are the summaries of reported incidents of campus climate concerns, organized by academic year.

Fall Semester 2023

There were 32 Campus Climate incidents reported via the Campus Climate Concern System during the Winter semester 2023. 

  • 30 incidents occurred on campus
  • 2 incidents occurred online

The majority of incidents fell into the following categories

  • Race/Ethnicity
  • Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity
  • Religion

All reported incidents were reviewed and follow-up with reporting and responding parties occurred when applicable. Support was provided to the victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals (where this was known). Examples of follow-up include discussions with students, faculty, and staff and/or educational programming with departments.

There were 33 Campus Climate incidents reported via the Campus Climate Concern System during the Winter semester 2023.

There were 51 Campus Climate incidents reported via the Campus Climate Concern System during the Winter semester 2019. 26 incidents occurred on the Allendale campus.  3 incidents occurred on the Pew campus. 4 were at off campus locations. 6 incidents occurred in academic buildings/classroom/laboratory space. 4 incidents occurred in living centers. There were 35 Campus Climate incidents reported via the Campus Climate Concern System during the Fall semester 2018. 16 incidents occurred on the Allendale campus.  3 incidents occurred on the Pew campus. 5 were at off campus locations. 1 incident occurred in academic buildings/classroom/laboratory space. 5 incidents occurred in living centers. There were 31 bias incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office. Twenty-six incidents occurred on the Allendale campus. Thirteen incidents occurred in academic buildings/classroom/laboratory space. Six incidents occurred in living centers. Reports included 12 incidents regarding race, 4 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 6 incidents regarding gender, 2 regarding national origin, and 2 political affiliation. Other areas identified included disability, familial status, and other. All reported incidents were reviewed and follow up with reporting and responding parties occurred when applicable. Support was provided to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals (where this was known). Examples of follow-up include discussions with students, faculty, and staff and/or educational programming with departments.

There were 49 bias incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office. Forty-three occurred on the Allendale campus.  Four incidents occurred on the Pew campus. Two were at off campus locations. Eighteen incidents occurred in living centers. Reports included 23 incidents regarding race, 10 incidents regarding religion,10 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 7 incidents regarding gender, 2 regarding national origin, 5 regarding gender identity, and 2 political affiliation. All reported incidents were reviewed and follow up with reporting and responding parties occurred when applicable. Support was provided to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals (where this was known). The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during the Winter Semester 2016:

There were 45 bias incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the winter semester 2016. Twenty-seven incidents occurred on the Allendale campus.  Five incidents occurred on the Pew campus. Eight were at off campus locations. Fifteen incidents occurred in academic buildings/classroom/laboratory space. Eight incidents occurred in living centers. Reports included 18 incidents regarding race, 8 incidents regarding religion, 4 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 6 incidents regarding gender, 4 regarding national origin, 2 regarding gender identity, 4 political affiliation, and 2 incidents regarding disability (6 identified as other). All reported incidents were reviewed and follow up with reporting and responding parties occurred when applicable. Support was provided to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals (where this was known). The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during the Fall Semester 2015:

There were 36 bias incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the fall semester 2015. Twenty-three incidents occurred on the Allendale campus.  Six incidents occurred on the Pew campus. Seven were at unreported locations. Ten incidents occurred in academic buildings/classroom/laboratory space. Ten incidents occurred in living centers. Reports included 15 incidents regarding race, 4 incidents regarding religion, 7 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 5 incidents regarding gender, 3 regarding national origin, 1 regarding gender identity, and 2 incidents regarding disability. All reported incidents were reviewed and follow up with reporting and responding parties occurred when applicable. Support was provided to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals (where this was known). The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during the Winter Semester 2015:

There were 56 bias incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the winter semester 2015. We had 5 incidents where multiple reports were submitted. Fifty-three incidents occurred on the Allendale campus.  Two incidents occurred on the Pew campus. Ten incidents occurred in academic buildings/classroom/laboratory space. Nine incidents occurred in living centers. Reports included 11 incidents regarding ethnicity/race, 9 incidents regarding religion, 7 incidents regarding LGBT, 4 incidents regarding gender, and 2 incidents regarding disability. All reported incidents were reviewed and action was taken with individuals identified as making biased comments and support provided to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals (where this was known). Examples of follow-up include discussions with students, faculty, and staff and/or educational programming with departments.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during the Fall Semester 2014:

There were 33 bias incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the fall semester 2014. We had one incident where multiple reports were submitted (seven). Twenty-four incidents occurred on the Allendale campus.  Two incidents occurred on the Pew campus. Four incidents occurred off campus or online. Seven incidents occurred in academic buildings/classroom/laboratory space. Eight incidents occurred in living centers.  One incident occurred in an office setting. Reports included 14 incidents regarding LGBT, 8 incidents regarding ethnicity/race, 10 incidents regarding religion, 13 incidents regarding gender, and 2 incidents regarding disability. All reported incidents were reviewed and action was taken with individuals identified as making biased comments and support provided to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals (where this was known). Examples of follow-up include discussions with students, faculty, and staff and/or educational programming with departments.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Winter Semester 2014:

There were 35 bias incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the winter semester 2014. We had two incidents where multiple reports were submitted (9 for one, and 3 for the other). Twenty-one incidents occurred on the Allendale campus. Three incidents occurred on the Pew campus. Nine incidents occurred in academic buildings/classroom/laboratory space. Three incidents occurred in dining space. Seven incidents regarding ethnicity/race, 2 incidents regarding religion, 4 incidents regarding gender, and 2 incidents regards disability. All reported incidents were reviewed and action was taken with individuals identified as making biased comments and support provided to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals (where this was known). There were 12 biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the fall semester 2013. Eleven incidents occurred on the Allendale campus. One incident occurred on the Pew campus. Six incidents occurred in academic buildings. Two incidents occurred in the fieldhouse/rec center. Four incidents occurred in living centers.. Reports included 6 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 3 incidents regarding ethnicity/race, 1 incident regarding religion, 2 incidents regarding gender, and 1 incident regarding mental health. Ten incidents involved written or oral comments and 2 incidents involved behavior. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Winter Semester 2013:

There were 8 biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the winter semester 2013. All eight incidents occurred on the Allendale campus. Two incidents were reported in housing areas, 2 incidents in academic buildings, 2 incidents in the Kirkhof Center, and 2 incidents in the fieldhouse. Reports included 2 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 3 incidents regarding race, 2 incidents regarding ethnicity, and 1 incident regarding disability. Four incidents involved anonymous written or oral comments, and 4 incidents involved comments made by individuals. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Fall Semester 2012:

There were 14 biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the fall semester 2012. Twelve incidents occurred on the Allendale campus and one occurred on the Pew campus. Four incidents were reported in housing areas, 2 incidents were reported in Kirkhof, 1 incident was reported in Kleiner, 1 incident was reported on a campus road, 2 incidents were reported on the bus, and 4 incidents were reported in academic buildings. Reports included 2 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 6 incidents regarding race, 1 incident regarding disability, 2 incident regarding religion, 2 incidents regarding ethnicity, and one incident regarding gender. One incident involved anonymous written comments and 13 incidents involved comments made by individuals. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

There were 8 biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the winter semester 2012. Six incidents occurred on the Allendale campus and two occurred on the Pew campus. Three incidents were reported in housing areas, 1 incident in the Commons, and four incidents in academic buildings. Reports included 2 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 3 incidents regarding race, and 3 incidents regarding gender. Three incidents involved anonymous written comments, and 5 incidents involved comments made by individuals. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

There were 15 biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the fall semester 2011. Thirteen incidents occurred on the Allendale campus and two occurred on the Pew campus. Eleven incidents were reported in housing areas, 2 incidents were reported in Kirkhof, 1 incident was reported in Kleiner, and 1 incident was reported in a parking lot. Reports included 8 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 5 incidents regarding race, 1 incident regarding gender, and 1 incident regarding ethnicity/religion. Four incidents involved anonymous written comments, and 11 incidents involved comments made by individuals. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Winter Semester 2011:

There were ten (10) biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the winter semester 2011. All incidents occurred on the Allendale campus with 3 reported in housing areas, 6 reported in academic buildings, and 1 reported on a walkway on campus. Reports included 4 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 2 incidents regarding race, 1 incident regarding gender, and 3 incidents regarding ethnicity. Five incidents involved anonymous written comments and five incidents involved comments made by individuals. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Fall Semester 2010:

There were seventeen (17) biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the fall semester 2010 although six (6) were not considered biased incidents. All biased incidents occurred on the Allendale campus with 4 reported in housing areas, 2 reported in the Kirkhof Center, 2 reported in academic buildings, 1 reported in the Connection, and 2 reported in the library. Reports included 5 incidents regarding sexual orientation with one of those including race as well, 4 incidents regarding race, 1 incident regarding religion, and 1 incident regarding gender. Six incidents involved anonymous written comments and five incidents involved comments made by individuals. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Winter Semester 2010:

There were eleven (11) biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the winter semester 2010. All incidents occurred on the Allendale campus with 4 reported in housing areas, 3 reported in the Kirkhof Center, 2 reported in academic buildings, 1 reported in Kleiner, and 1 reported in the fieldhouse. Reports included 6 incidents regarding sexual orientation with one of those including race as well, 2 incidents regarding race, 1 incident regarding religion, and 2 incidents regarding ethnicity. Five incidents involved anonymous comments posted on public white boards or scrawled on a restroom stall wall, four incidents involved comments made by individuals, and two incidents involved vandalism to postings on bulletin boards. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Fall Semester 2009:

There were sixteen (16) biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the fall semester 2009. All incidents but one (1) occurred on the Allendale campus with11 reported in freshman housing areas, 2 reported in the Kirkhof Center, 2 reported in upper-class housing areas, and 1 reported in an academic building. Reports included 9 incidents regarding sexual orientation, 3 incidents regarding race, 2 incidents regarding disability, and 2 incidents regarding gender. Nine incidents involved anonymous comments posted on public white boards or scrawled on a door, five incidents involved comments made by individuals, and two incidents involved vandalized posters. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

There were five (5) biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the winter semester 2009. All incidents occurred on the Allendale campus with 2 reported in freshman housing areas, 2 reported in the Kirkhof Center, and 1 reported on the bus. Reports included 3 incidents regarding sexual orientation with one of those including race as well and 2 incidents regarding race. Three incidents involved anonymous comments posted on public white boards or scrawled on a restroom stall wall and two incidents involved comments made by individuals. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Fall Semester 2008:

There were three (3) biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the fall semester 2008. All incidents occurred on the Allendale campus with 1 reported in a freshman housing area and 2 reported in academic buildings. Reports included 3 incidents regarding race with one also involving religion. All incidents involved anonymous comments posted on public white boards or scrawled on a restroom stall wall. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Winter Semester 2008:

There were six (6) biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the winter semester 2008. All incidents occurred on the Allendale campus with 4 reported in freshman housing areas and 2 reported in academic buildings. Reports included 3 incidents regarding sexual orientation with two of those including race as well, 2 incidents regarding race with one of those including religion and gender too, and 1 incident regarding religion. Most incidents involved anonymous comments posted on public white boards or scrawled on a restroom stall wall. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Fall Semester 2007:

There were eight (8) biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the fall semester 2007. All incidents, except one, occurred on the Allendale campus with 3 reported in freshman housing areas, 3 reported in upperclass housing areas, and 2 reported in academic buildings. Reports included 6 incidents regarding sexual orientation with one of those including political remarks too, and 2 incidents regarding race. Most incidents involved anonymous comments posted on public white boards or scrawled on stall walls in restrooms. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

There were thirteen (13) biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the winter semester 2007. All incidents, except one, occurred on the Allendale campus with 5 reported in freshman housing areas, 4 reported in upperclass housing areas, and 4 reported in academic buildings. Reports included 8 incidents regarding sexual orientation with one of those including religious and two including political remarks too, 4 incidents regarding race, and 1 incident regarding hate comments/symbols. Most incidents involved anonymous comments posted on public white boards or scrawled on stall walls in restrooms. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.

The following report summarizes the bias incidents that have been reported during Fall Semester 2006:

There were eighteen (18) biased incidents reported to the Dean of Students Office during the fall semester 2006. All incidents occurred on the Allendale campus with fourteen (14) reported in freshman housing areas, three (3) in academic buildings, and one (1) in an off campus housing area near campus. Reports included nine (9) incidents regarding sexual orientation, four (4) incidents regarding race, one (1) incident regarding sexual orientation and race, three (3) incidents involving hate symbols, and one (1) incident regarding religion. Most incidents involved anonymous comments posted on public white boards or scrawled on posters in living areas. The Dean of Students Office has followed up on all reported incidents, taken appropriate follow-up actions, and provided support to victim(s) and/or the reporting individuals.
