Badge in Design Thinking
The Global Engineering Summer Experience is a 10-day, residential, summer camp for undergraduate students. It is a hands-on, design & build, project-based learning experience, paired with cultural exploration and community engagement. Students will work in teams to solve real-world challenges in emerging areas like sustainability and healthcare technology and engage with local industry & community via industry and museum tours, cultural exploration, guest speakers, and a final showcase of projects. Professional skills such as teamwork, problem solving and communication (oral and written) are emphasized. This non-credit bearing, graduate level badge will allow us to recognize the efforts of these summer camp participants who have received training in the design process and built up a marketable skill set.
Students completing this badge will be able to
- Gain practical experience and deepen their knowledge about the engineering design process.
- Develop valuable transferable skills crucial for academic and professional success.
- Build a strong network of peers, mentors, and professionals.
- Enhance their understanding of design methodology and ethical practices.
- Make informed decisions about their post-graduation plans, whether pursuing further education or entering the workforce.
List of activities/assessments to demonstrate/practice skills include:
- Implementation of the 5-step Design Thinking process - Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.
- Production of isometric and orthographic drawings.
- Experience on Bench mills and with 3D printing.
- Assignments, teamwork, and project presentations will be used to assess skills.
This badge will only be offered at the graduate level and is non-credit bearing.
