Requirements for a Major Science Secondary Education (89 credits)
The Major in Science with Secondary Endorsement is designed for students seeking certification to teach science in middle grades (5-9) and/or high school (7-12), or both. Students who pass the Michigan Department of Education Science Secondary Test will receive the Science DQ Endorsement, which is in high demand for job placement in the State of Michigan. The endorsement certifies students to teach general science courses at the middle school level, and also discipline-specific courses in biology, chemistry, Earth science, and physics at the high school level. This major prepares students in both a breadth and depth of science content, as well as in science teaching methods, to prepare preservice teachers for a broad range of teaching opportunities. To be certified, students must complete the science secondary education major with a 3.0 GPA and have an overall GPA of 2.7.
OPTIONAL CONTENT SPECIALIZATIONS
Students Majoring in Science-Secondary Education, have the option to add an emphasis in any of four science content areas, : Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, and Physics. These emphasis programs are designed to prepare the students to teach advanced courses and elective courses in high schools. Students completing the Optional Specializations will take an additional Michigan Department of Education Science Test in their area of specialization. Students Completing the program and passing the test will receive the appropriate additional endorsements on their certificate. Biology (IA), Chemistry (IC), Earth/Space Science (IH), or Physics (IE).
ASSOCIATED PROGRAMS
Secondary Education Major. In order to achieve certification, all students must also complete a major in Secondary Education through the College of Education and Community Innovation (CECI). Together, the two majors meet the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Standards for the Preparation of Teachers of Science (endorsement code DQ). Candidates must also pass the corresponding MTTC tests to earn their teacher certificate and endorsements.
Requirements for the Secondary Education - Core Courses
The Major in Science with Secondary Endorsement must be completed with a GPA of 2.7 to apply for the Teacher Apprenticeship (EDI 331/EDI 332) and Internship (EDI 431/EDI 432) experiences.
