FRE 425 - Romantics vs. Realists

This course offers an in-depth study of 19th-century French literature, with a focus on the novel and poetry. Special emphasis is placed on the dynamic tension between Romanticism and Realism. Readings highlight the evolution of literary form and ideology during a century of profound transformation. Offered winter semester in even-numbered years. Prerequisites: C or better in all core curriculum courses (FRE 315, FRE 317, and FRE 318) and either FRE 321, FRE 322, or FRE 323, or permission of instructor.
