HNR 219 - Islamic Middle East II: The Modern World
This course, which is a continuation of HNR 209/210, covers the history, literature, philosophy, and art of the Islamic Middle East from the decline of the Ottoman period to the present. This time period is one of growth and uncertainty, with such major historical events as the fall of the Ottoman Empire, World Wars I and II, and the colonization of the Middle East. The course looks at how these historical events left their mark in philosophy, literature (including poetry and the birth of the Arabic novel and postcolonial theory/criticism), and art. Fulfills Foundation - Arts. Offered winter semester. Prerequisites: HNR 209 and HNR 210. Must be taken concurrently with HNR 220.
