At GVSU Brass Day, high school* brass musicians are invited to spend an afternoon at GVSU listening to, rehearsing, and performing brass ensemble music alongside current GVSU brass students. The event will be led by and feature masterclasses with GVSU professors Alex Wilson (trumpet), Rebecca Salo (horn), Ryan Christianson (trombone), and Paul Carlson (euphonium and tuba).
The event will include:
- Performances by the GVSU Faculty Brass Quartet and GVSU student ensembles.
- Masterclasses for each brass instrument
- Brass Day Choir rehearsal, where attendees will be mixed in with current GVSU brass students.
- The Brass Day Recital, featuring the Brass Day Choir, concludes the event!
*Middle school students are also welcome, conditionally. The event is focused around performing brass choir music with only an afternoon's worth of rehearsal, and the music is geared to be accessible to high school students. We want a positive experience for all participants, and at past events, some younger participants walked away frustrated that they couldn't keep up. Therefore, middle schoolers wishing to participate should be proficient sight-readers or there should be some other reason to believe they will enjoy the event, like attending with an older sibling. Please contact Dr. Alex Wilson with any questions.
