Limited knowledge about Marco Polo has given rise to numerous myths and to questions about the veracity of his work, including whether he actually reached China. This lecture attempts to sort out fact from fiction and to describe the colorful adventure of the boy who started his voyage at the age of 18.
Morris Rossabi (Ph.D., Columbia University) teaches Chinese, Inner Asian, and Mongolian History at the City University of New York and Columbia University and is the author or editor of more than twenty books, including Kublai Khan; Modern Mongolia; Voyager to Xanadu; The Mongols: A Very Short Introduction; Governing China’s Multi-ethnic Frontiers, and other works and more than 100 book chapters and articles. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, he has traveled extensively in Asia and Europe and conducts research in a variety of Asian and Western languages.
