AWRI Science Advisory Board
In 2002, the Annis Water Resources Institute formed an external Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), composed of internationally renowned scientists, with the following goals in mind:
• Gain a better understanding of AWRI/GVSU culture, role, and its programs
• Provide a report outlining AWRI strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges
• Provide recommendations for the future
The SAB conducts a review of AWRI every three years. The next one will take place March 11-12, 2014.
We welcome our returning SAB members: Dr. Carol Johnston (chair) from South Dakota State University, Dr. Gary Lamberti (University of Notre Dame), Dr. Don Scavia (University of Michigan), and Dr. Harvey Bootsma (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee).

Seminar Speaker: Dr. Cayelan Carey, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech presented: "Nutrients mediate the ecosystem effects of cyanobacteria in oligotrophic lakes".

GVSU’s Regional Math and Science Center held a Project PRIME Plus workshop for area teachers.

The Muskegon Lake Watershed Partnership held a public meeting at the LMC.

GVSU Health and Wellness held biometric screenings for Muskegon area faculty and staff.
Feb 25
The United Way of the Lakeshore held their Board of Directors retreat at the LMC.
Bopi Biddanda served on the 2014 Michigan Space Grants Consortium’s Panel held in Ann Arbor on February 13. GVSU received 2 Faculty Seed Grants, 1 Program Grant, 1 Graduate Fellowship (John Skutnik of AWRI, advised by Kevin Strychar) and 2 Undergraduate Fellowships totaling ~$29,000 for the 2014-2015 period. Bopi serves as the Director of NASA-MSGC programs for GVSU.
Al Steinman has been asked to serve on a groundwater advisory council for Ottawa County.
Al Steinman was interviewed by Chuck LaTour, WOOD Radio, on the role of quagga mussels in local lakes on February 12.
Al Steinman was interviewed by John Wiegand, GR Rapidian, on effects of snowmelt on local waterways on February 19.
Janet Vail will be serving on the education committee for the National Association of Marine Laboratories.
Janet Vail has been asked to be a member of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement Annex 2 Outreach/Engagement Task Team. This team is charged with developing a work plan/strategy for outreaching and engaging stakeholders on Annex 2 (LAMPs) of the Great Lakes Water Agreement, as well as on other annexes.

Rick Rediske gave a presentation about his research on water quality in Haiti at the Global Awareness Festival held at Muskegon Community College on February 12. Two undergraduate students and Nicole Horne (graduate student working with Bopi Biddanda) also made presentations. Sixty people attended and the presentations were well received.
Carl Ruetz was guest lecturer for NRM 150, Introduction to Natural Resources Management, on February 18.
