Jay Van Andel

Jay Van Andel co-founded Amway Corporation with partner Richard M. Devos in 1959. By the year 2000, more than 3 million independent business owners were selling Amway products in 80 countries and territories.

Jay Van Andel's business leadership was extensive, ranging from Founding chairperson of the Right Place Program in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to chairman of the Board of both the U.S. and Michigan Chambers of Commerce, U.S. Chairman of the Netherlands, American Bicentennial Commission, and U.S. Commissioner General of International Specialized Exposition in Genoa, Italy (Genoa Expo' 92).

While leading Amway to record growth through international expansion, Jay became convinced that the global marketplace would be pivotal in enhancing the prosperity of the region where he began his business.

Recognizing that the Richard M. Devos Center would be a focal point for international business education and activity, Jay became a major benefactor of the building. Named in his honor and dedicated to international business assistance for local companies, the Van Andel Global Trade Center is the university's commitment to fulfilling the global vision of one of the world's most outstanding entrepreneurs.

"International trade allows each country to do what it does best and share the benefits of that specialization with consumers all over the world."
