School of Communications Scholarships
DEADLINE: the first Monday in February, 5 p.m.
Background:
The School of Communications Scholarship is designed to honor upper level School of Communications students who have demonstrated promise in their chosen field of study.
Scholarship funds will be awarded on a competitive basis. The student must have declared a major in the School of Communications, be in good academic standing, and have completed a minimum of 30 credits at GVSU.
Individual scholarships will be in the $1000. range. The scholarships are not automatically renewable, but students may re-apply. Scholarship awards are for fall of the following academic year. Decision will be based on quality and content of application materials.
Application Guidelines:
1. Include a cover page:

2. Write a one or two page essay including:
A personal statement that speaks to your background, goals, directions and plans after graduation. (20 points)
A statement that speaks to how you have shown promise, participated in extra-curricular activities, provided leadership or otherwise excelled at GVSU. (30 points)
A statement addressing how you will take advantage of the opportunity afforded by this scholarship (20 points)
3. Attach your resume. (20 points)
4. Attach your most recent unofficial GVSU transcript. (10 points based on course of study and grades)

The Warren Reynolds Scholarship
Background:
The Warren Reynolds Scholarship is named in honor of the longtime sports director at WOOD- TV in Grand Rapids. Warren Reynolds, who died of cancer in 2000 and was a champion of charitable causes throughout the region, left a legacy of integrity in broadcast journalism. This scholarship is intended for students who exemplify these ideals and show a passion for electronic media. Preference will be given to students pursuing a career in sports broadcasting.
Eligibility:
Students are qualified to apply if they:
Are currently enrolled as a full-time Junior or Senior in the School of Communications.
Have demonstrated leadership in courses, internships, broadcasting
assignments and extracurricular activities.
Have demonstrated financial need by completing the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Gates Millenium Scholarships
Background:
The Gates Millenium Scholarship is aimed at increasing the number of low-income Afican Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, American Indians / Alaska Natives, and Hispanic Americans enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, this award program promotes academic excellence and enhances access to higher education for thousands of outstanding low-income students.
Eligibility:
Individuals are eligible to be considered for a Gates Millenium Scholarship if they:

Have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale;

Are accepted into or enrolled full time in an accredited college or university for the academic year at the time of the award;

Have demonstrated financial need as defined by the federal needs analysis formula; and
-
Have demonstrated leadership commitment through participation in community servoce, extracurricular activities or other activities that reflect leadership abilities.

Calder Scholarship
Full Tuition for a Senior student working in the Arts ( Sch/Comm: Photography, Film&Video, Theatre)
1) Applicants are nominated by their units. Each unit may nominate up to three candidates. Applicants should be completing their third year of study. The Scholarship provides full tuition for their senior year. The committe awards one scholarship per year.
2) Applicants should provide five copies of the following materials: a personal statement explaining something of what their art means to them and what they hope that it will mean to others; a c.v.; a copy of their GVSU transcript (the kind they can get off the computer is fine); three letters of recommendation, at least one of which should be from a faculty member in the nominating unit; any supplemental materials that seem appropriate (concert/exhibit programs, etc.).
3) Deadline for completed applications: March.
4) The judging sessions will be scheduled for late March or early April. The committee will meet with each candidate for approximately half an hour. The applicants will perform/present samples of their work and discuss them with the committee members.
Dirk Koning Film/Video Scholarship
Dirk Koning was the founding Director of the Community Media Center in Grand Rapids MI, and an adjunct faculty member at GVSU. Dirk was a media visionary, a passionate ambassador for public access, who believed that the airwaves belong to the people. He was an internationally recognized media activist and champion for free speech. Dirk died unexpectedly in 2005 at the age of 48. We have named this scholarship in his honor.
Scholarship moneys from this fund are awarded on a competitive basis to upper level Film and Video Production majors who have made or intend to make media that contributes to the improvement of society. Individual scholarships, in the $1000 range, are not automatically renewable, but students may re-apply. Scholarship awards begin fall of the following academic year.
Awards are based on an essay, resume, and grade point average, determined by a committee consisting of Film/Video faculty and community representatives.

Friends of West Michigan Public Broadcasting Student Employee Scholarship

Two annual full tuition scholarships.

Available to one TV and one Audio student, each of whom have worked at TV or radio stations WGVU/WGVK-TV or WGVU-Radio.
