  • Corey Anton, Associate Professor
    Dr. Anton is an award-winning teacher and author. He is author of Selfhood and Authenticity (New York: SUNY Press, 2001), and has published in journals such as: Communication Theory, Philosophy and Rhetoric, Human Studies, The Atlantic Journal of Communication, Communication Studies, ETC, Semiotica, The American Journal of Semiotics, and afterimage. He is also the current Editor for the journal Explorations in Media Ecology.  Most recently, Anton has been named a Fellow of the International Communicology Institute and elected as a Trustee on the Board of Directors for the Institute of General Semantics.  Among the courses that professor Anton regularly teaches are: Theories of Communication, History of Communications Technologies, Critical Interpretation, Special Topics in Communication, and Interpersonal Communication.  (B.A., University of Wisconsin-Parkside; M.S., Illinois State University; Ph.D., Purdue University) antonc@gvsu.edu

  • Robert Mayberry, Emeritus Professor
    Professor Mayberry has been a central voice among the areas in which philosophy, rhetoric and communications overlap, such as Argument, Interpretation, Theory, and Aesthetics. Professor Mayberry is an internationally recognized author, journalist, and lecturer on wines of the Rhone Valley. In 1998 Prof. Mayberry was named Chevalier de L''Ordre du Merite Agricole by the French Ministery of Agriculture for his scholarly service to French agriculture.   • Dr. Alex Nesterenko, Professor
    Dr. Nesterenko's scholarly interests lie in the areas of communication theory and research, applied communications research, and visual communication. Of special interest are advanced research methodologies, most notably Q-methodology and factor analysis.  He has a wide range of experience as an advisor and consultant to non-profit organizations, particularly those in health care, as well as to corporations, and media.   • Valerie Peterson, Associate Professor
    Dr. Peterson teaches courses in visual communication, communication perspectives, critical interpretation, and public speaking. Recent publications include an essay on interdisciplinarity (Women and Language, 2009), a rhetorical analysis of The Joy of Sex (Journal of Popular Communication, 2008), an essay on sophistic thought (lead article, "Advances in the History of Rhetoric: The First Six Years," 2007), and a chapter on the  Ellen TV sitcom in America Viewed and Skewed: Television Situation Comedies (Hampton Press, 2005).  Other published writings have addressed topics such as communication theory (Journal of the Northwest Communication Association, 2004; Grand Valley Review, 2004), the use of subject position in argument (Communication Studies, 2003), the rhetorical criticism of visuals (Southern Communication Journal, 2001), sexual politics (Journal of Communication Inquiry, 2002; Women and Language, 2000), and pedagogy (Communication Teacher, 2006; The Successful Professor, 2004; Teaching Ideas for the Basic Communication Course, 2001; Iowa Journal of Communication, 1996).

  • Robert Swieringa, Assistant Professor 
    Dr. Swieringa's primary teaching interests include discourse and social interaction, communication theory, and film history and criticism. His teaching interests include Concepts of Communication, Argument and Analysis, Film Culture, Critical Interpretation, Communication Theory, and Issues in Communication (Capstone). His primary research is in the area of Language and Social Interaction, examining routine situated conversation and its relation to developing practice, membership, identity and community in scientific and institutional settings. He has presented at national and international conferences in communication and in science studies, addressing such topics as the shifting roles of novice and expert between professor and students, the interactive maintenance of neutrality for scientific work, the discursive management of laboratory activity, and the co-construction of reports in meetings.   • Danielle R. Wiese Leek, Assistant Professor
    Dr. Wiese Leek specializes in the study of political communication and rhetoric.  Her publications focus on the changes in American electoral politics brought on by the rapid growth of new media technologies.  She has written about cyber-politics, campaign websites, and the blogosphere.  Her teaching interests include: Media Literacy, History of Communication Technologies, Media & Society, Concepts in Communication, and Critical Interpretation.  (B.A., Eastern Michigan University, M.A. and PhD, University of Iowa) wiesed@gvsu.edu
  • Dr. Melba Vélez, Assistant Professor
    Dr. Vélez’s areas of research are communication ethics and environmental communication in the U.S. and the Caribbean. Her work examines the ways in which the long-term success of conservation efforts depend upon fundamental shifts in cultural values, in aesthetic and moral communication, and in shared understandings of how the individual fits into social and ecological communities. In addition, Dr. Vélez had researched and published in the era of Latin-American/Caribbean/Latina-o philosophy and intellectual history. She has taught courses in Advanced Research Writing, Fundamentals of Speech Communication, Spanish Level II, Oral and Written Communication, and popular culture.   • Peter Zhang, Assistant Professor
    Trained as a critical communication studies pedagogue-scholar, Dr. Zhang is interested in the intersection of rhetoric, cultural studies, entrepreneurship, critical organizational communication, political theatrics, and transition-period China.  His teaching interests include Theories of Communication, Critical Interpretation, Argument and Analysis, Concepts in Communication, Special Topics in Communication, among others.  Currently, he serves as article referee for The Quarterly Journal of Speech.  (Ph.D., Indiana University, Bloomington; M.A., Nankai University; B.A., Xi’an Jiaotong University)  zhangp@gvsu.edu
