Joe Helgert, Ph.D., Associate Professor
Dr. Helgert teaches advertising at the undergraduate level and communications management at the graduate level.  He has taught at the University of Arizona, Michigan State University, Central Michigan University and the University of Wisconsin in communications, management and marketing. Dr. Helgert was a product promotion manager at Motorola, Inc. and has had over twelve years of experience in marketing and advertising. Joe Helgert
Jeesun Kim, Ph.D., Assistant Professor
Dr. Kim teaches courses in public relations and advertising. Her research focuses on crisis communication, activism, organizational identity, and health communication. Her work has been published in journals such as Public Relations Review and the Journal of Marketing Communications. She also won the top student paper award for the Public Relations Division of the International Communication Association. Her professional experience includes PR consulting work for a variety of government, corporate, and nonprofit organizations as a PR consultant/researcher. She also worked at both Polaris Project, the largest grassroots anti-human trafficking organization in the United States and Voice of America, a U.S. government-run broadcaster. She is a member of the International Communication Association and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Tim Penning, M.A., Associate Professor
Professor Tim Penning, APR teaches courses in public relations. He   has worked as a staff writer and editor for Traverse Magazine and   Advance Newspapers. Following his career in journalism, Tim was   communication director for an international mission agency, media   relations manager for Grand Valley State University, and public   relations director for the Grand Rapids Community Foundation. As a   professor, he continues to practice public relations as a consultant   with his own business, Penning Ink. He was won several awards for his   public relations work and was named "Distinguished Practitioner" by   the West Michigan Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America   in 2001 and 2005. He is active with the Public Relations Society of   America, having served as president of the West Michigan chapter in   2004 and on its board for seven years. He also advises the GVSU   student chapter of PRSSA. Tim is a founder and board member of   Interchange: The Association for West Michigan Communication   Professionals and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honors   Society. Betty Pritchard, Ed.D., Emeritus Professor

Dr. Pritchard retired in 2006 from teaching undergraduate courses in public relations and courses in professional ethics at the graduate level. She gained her professional experience as Statistical Analyst at Market Opinion Research in Detroit, as Director of Marketing and Communications for Macomb Community College, and as Associate Vice President for University Advancement at Ferris State University. Her research interests include the process of public opinion formation, the historical development of public relations as a discipline, ethics in organizations and the international practice of public relations. She earned her APR accreditation from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), where she served as a district officer and on national committees. She won the national Silver Anvil Award for excellence in Community Relations programs and has been named as West Michigan Public Relations Professional of the Year.  More recently, she was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the West Michigan PRSA.   (B.A., M.A.T., Oakland University; Ed.D., Western Michigan University). pritchab@gvsu.edu




Roy J. Winegar, Ph.D., Assistant Professor

Dr. Winegar teaches advertising classes at the undergraduate level and core communications courses at the graduate level. His years of service as the project manager for the Grand Valley website provides him with a wealth of experience with the Internet's interactive marketing and advertising capabilities. His research interests focus on the online cultures of the Internet, the Internet's impact on advertising and popular culture and its impact on daily off-line living, critical theory and the critical perspective in popular culture. He is a member of the Advertising Educational Foundation, the American Advertising Federation, the Interactive Advertising Bureau, and the National Communication Association (B.S., M.S., Grand Valley State University; Ph.D. The Graduate School of Union Institute and University). winegarr@gvsu.edu



Kelly A. Campbell, M.A., Affiliate Professor

Professor Kelly Campbell teaches undergraduate level public relations and advertising courses. Her previous communications and public relations experience encompass a variety of organizations such as General Dynamics Land Systems, American Red Cross, as well as having worked for newspapers, a food ingredient manufacturer, and a major golfing resort. Campbell is a past board member of the PRSA of West Michigan and Interchange, the Association for West Michigan Communication Professionals and volunteers with several Grand Rapids area nonprofits. Currently, she is pursuing her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in higher education. Her research interest is public relations in the college and university context. Frank Blossom, MBA, Visiting Professor

Frank teaches advertising, PR, creativity and story making classes. He developed his brand building skills as a copywriter and Creative Director at Leo Burnett, D’Arcy, Noble & Associates and Felder Communications Group. In 2001 he founded The Polishing Center and serves as Head Coach helping young creatives build their portfolios and interviewing skills. Additionally, Frank manages Frank Communications and serves as head referee for the Creative  Smackdown - a creative competition showcase bringing together students from all over Michigan with advertising and design professionals. For the past 20 years, The American Advertising Federation, the National Student Advertising Competition, and other ad associations have tapped Frank’s experience to judge local, regional, national and international advertising competitions. His research, writing and speaking engagements concentrate on creativity and brand building. Frank serves on the Board of Directors of the Women’s Resource Center and facilitates visual and verbal communications for VSA. Peggy Howard, M.A., Affiliate Professor

Professor Peggy Howard teaches undergraduate level public relations and research courses. She has 20 plus years of public relations and communications experience gained through various positions, including market communications director for Saint Joseph’s Care Center, South Bend, Indiana, marketing manager for Lakeland Regional Health Care System, St. Joseph, Michigan, and as a public relations consultant. Howard also co-owned Straightline, a public relations firm, with business partner Bill McKendry, for five years. She served as president and large accounts manager for the firm until its sale to Lambert, Edwards & Associates in May, 2005. She is a member of PRSA, and has served as a volunteer for numerous nonprofit organizations. John Stipe, M.S., Visiting Professor
Professor John Stipe teaches advertising and research (for advertising and public relations) courses.  Professionally, he spent 32 years with Booth Newspapers (a Michigan chain of eight major daily newspapers), serving in several advertising, research, marketing, sales and management positions.  His last seven years with the company were spent as advertising manager.  Professor Stipe has been nationally recognized for his contributions to newspaper co-operative advertising.  His developmental advertising design work with manufacturers, distributors and retailers earned him the industry’s highest honor (the John Maione Award).  Professor Stipe has been active in several professional organizations including, the Newspaper Association of America, Adcraft Club of Detroit and the Flint Area Advertising Federation.  He has also served as a volunteer marketing consultant to Hospice of Michigan.  He is dedicated to helping students develop life-long learning skills.  (B.S., Journalism, Central Michigan University; M.S., Communications, Grand Valley State University).  stipej@gvsu.edu
