What is an official retiree?

To qualify as an official retiree, your age plus years of service must equal 75 or more.  Please refer to the Retiree Benefits page, Documents & Resources at http://www.gvsu.edu/healthwellness/retirement-documents-and-resources-451.htm for further information on benefits for official retirees.

Rent-A-Rower is a program that allows student athletes to raise money towards their semester dues. Rent-A-Rower Online Form can be found at http://www.grandvalleyrowing.com/newsite/home

How can I contact other GVSU retirees?

Visit the GVSU Retiree Directory at http://www.gvsu.edu/retiree/ and click on Directory.  You will be able to connect with other GVSU retirees, however, you must register to be able to access the directory and to have your information included in the directory.

 

Do I have access to Encompass GVSU’s counseling services?

Yes.  If you or one of your household dependents are in need of counseling services, contact Encompass at 1-800-788-8630 for an appointment.  You are entitled to 7 free counseling sessions. 

 

As a retiree can I use the Rec Center at the Fieldhouse?

Retirees are entitled to a free membership.  Simply fill out a Faculty/Staff membership form at the Rec Center Welcome Desk and make a note on there that you are a retiree.  HR is contacted for verification before the membership is processed. Also, your spouse can be added to the membership for $20/year.

 

If I want to take classes what is available to me?

If you are an official retiree (meaning that your age + years of service equals 75 or more) you can register for classes free of charge.  However, you must participate in all aspects of the class such as assignments and tests. 

 

What is Grand Forum and what types of events do they have for retirees?

Grand Forum is an educational outreach program for adults 55 and older. Grand Forum provides the opportunity for individuals of diverse backgrounds to meet in an academic setting for the purpose of intellectual stimulation and social exchange.  Led by university faculty and administrators, community leaders, Grand Forum members, independent scholars and local professionals, topics are offered in such fields as the arts, business, current events, history and science.  Your first year after retirement is free.  Yearly fee is $105.00.  For more information email Judy Palmer or call the office at (616) 331-6615.  You can visit their website at http://www.gvsu.edu/learn/grand-forum-7.htm

How do I get my retiree parking pass?

Though you are no longer employed with GVSU, you are a Laker for a Lifetime and it is important to continue to provide you with parking options.  The benefit of the Retiree Permit is that it allows you to continue to park as you did when you were working for the university. The Retiree Permit is valid for four years. You may exchange your current Faculty/Staff permit by stopping into the Public Safety office on the Allendale Campus. Please feel free to call or check our website for hours of operation. Annually, Public Safety receive an updated list from Human Resources of all active retirees. To be considered eligible, you will need to be registered on the Grand Valley Human Resources Retiree Connection website via the Retiree Directory. If you are on the list and your permit has expired, you will automatically receive a new Retiree Permit, sent to the address you last provided HR.  If you have any questions or concerns, give Public Safety a call at 616-331-PARK (7275).

 

How can I find resources for elder care?

We want to support you through all of your life events including the care of an elderly loved one.  Through the GVSU Health and Wellness program, elder care resource and referral is available.  Either visit http://www.gvsu.edu/healthwellness/elder-care-11.htm for more information or contact Work Life Consultant. 

Where can I find resources for financial and legal services, convenience services, and more?

As a GVSU retiree you have access to GVSU’s employee assistance services.  Simply call 1-800-788-8630 and find resources and referrals for most any life event.  Let Encompass help make your life journey just a bit easier. 

 

Can retirees sell an item on the GVSU Barter Board?  How can I do that?

Yes Retirees can post items on the Barter Board.  Using your GVSU login, go into Outlook and click on all public folders.  The Barter Board should appear under public folders. 

 

When is the Retiree Reception?

The retiree reception typically falls during the early part of summer. Please keep an eye on your mailbox for your invitation. If you have questions please feel free to reach out to University Development at 616-331-6000.
