Wetlands Ecosystem Service Values: Nutrient Cycling - Waste Assimilation

Land Use: Wetlands
Ecosystem Service: Nutrient Cycling-Waste Assimilation
Regional Value Estimate: $1,067-$2,040 per acre per year
Confidence Level (in estimated value): Moderate

How was value determined:

  1. The range of values for regional wetlands nutrient cycling-waste assimilation were transferred from one peer-reviewed study of wetland coastal systems for wastewater treatment in Louisiana (Breaux et al. 1995).
  2. The data from this study were adjusted to the West Michigan policy region.

Value estimate limitations:

  1. The values are based on the roles of wetlands in improving water quality by removing nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus) and sediments during the tertiary treatment process from municipal wastewater.
  2. The values may vary depending on the requirements of local authorities.

Value was not determined for this land use ecosystem service at the county-level because there were insufficient data to do so.
