Professor Stewart received her Ph.D. in May 2000 from the University of South Carolina. Her dissertation focused on racial and ethnic variation in academic achievement, educational attainment, and earnings. Dr. Stewart's current research and teaching interests are in the areas of race and ethnicity, critical pedagogy, and the use of the tradition of the theater of the oppressed to connect audiences to concepts important to the comprehension of contemporary racial inequality and oppression. Professor Stewart is the creator and leader of Act on Racism, an anti-racism theater group operating at GVSU since 2005. Act on Racism has performed in over 50 venues to date and continues to find ways to create dialogue about race and racism at GVSU and in the larger world.
