Terminal Cleaning Guidelines

Cleaning of Credit Card Terminals

The following provides general guidance on the proper cleaning procedures for Grand Valley State University credit card processing terminals.

Frequency: The frequency depends on where the terminal is placed and the number of people that come into contact with it.

  • All terminals should be cleaned daily whether at the beginning or end of each day.
  • If you are the only person using the terminal during the day then cleaning once a day will be sufficient.
  • If more than one member of your staff will be using the terminal, then cleaning should be completed in between each user.
  • If you have a forward-facing terminal that is utilized by multiple customers during the course of the day, then best efforts should be made to clean in between transactions.

Caution for Terminals (don’ts):  Applicable for all VeriFone and Ingenico model terminals.

  • Do not use aerosol sprays, bleach or abrasive products.
  • Do not clean the terminal’s electrical connections.
  • Do not spray cleaner directly onto the terminal.
  • Do not allow moisture to enter terminal openings.
  • Do not put anything into the terminal’s smart card reader slot.

Cleaning (do’s): Applicable for all Verifone models and Ingenico model Move 5000.

  • A Clorox disinfectant wipe or a wipe containing 70% alcohol, should be gently and carefully wiped on the surface of the terminal including the display, touchscreen, and keypad if applicable.
  • If using a spray cleaner, cleaners should be spray into a lint free soft cloth.
  • Be sure no excessive moisture remains on the terminal.

Cleaning (do’s): Applicable for Ingenico models iWL255 and Desktop 3500

  • Alcohol cleaning solutions cannot be used on these models.  Ingenico recommends using a lint-free soft cloth that is very lightly soaked with soapy water to clean the outside of the terminal.
  • Be sure no excessive moisture remains on the terminal.
