Maajtaadaa! Welcome

Join us for Laker Maajtaadaa! Welcome

The Maajtaadaa! Welcome is a three-day experience offering various workshops that will assist you in your first year at GVSU. This program is intentionally designed to create culturally responsive and educational spaces that embrace the foundational teaching of the Anishinaabe people, including the Medicine Wheel teachings, and the Niizhwaaswi Gmishoomisnaa Kinoomaagewinan (7 Grandfather Teachings). This is a great way to connect with GVSU dedicated and involved faculty/staff, and upper-class student leaders.

Schedule for 2025 Welcome is currently under construction, but you are able register for our Laker Connections: Maajtaadaa! Welcome by clicking HERE!

Next, Office of Multicultural Affairs offers the opportunity to enroll in the Laker Connections -Mno’Chigewin: Native Student Success Program (LC-Mno’). Mno’ participants attend workshops, lectures, and cultural experiences that reaffirm or connect to their ancestral roots. This program also focuses on connecting students with dedicated and involved faculty, staff, and community organizations. Mno’ participants also enjoy access to Enji-maawnjiding (Place of Gathering), Native American Heritage Month Celebrations, Indigi-Fest, Spring Powwow, and cultural and community place-based learning experiences!

What you will get out of it:

-Connections with other incoming Native American/Indigenous students and current upperclassmen

-Connections to other Native American/Indigenous community members and allies, active in serving our incoming students.

-Connections with GVSU students of color

-Tour of campus and classrooms

-Meet and greet with multicultural student organizations

-Learn about campus resources and services

-Early move in on campus and meals during welcome
