The History of Stage 3

Did you know that in the 1970s, GVSU had its own performing arts theater in downtown Grand Rapids? Long before the Haas Center for Performing Arts, GVSU’s growing theater faculty created Stage 3, also known as the Grand Rapids Experimental Theatre Workshop. Soon located in a former shoe store on Campau Ave NW, the theater aimed to make artistic connections between the Grand Rapids community and GVSU.

Lemmen Library and Archives Student Assistant Juliet Veliz-Figueroa has written a deep dive using primary source material held in the Archives to illuminate the history of GVSU’s Stage 3.
