K-12 Connect Specialists will be available to support via phone, text, or email between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Tutoring can take place any day at any time.

K-12 Connect services will run continuously; however, it is dependent on tutor availability. The program will close briefly during winter break to accommodate holidays.

K-12 Connect’s homework help tutoring for families is free. Schools have the opportunity to contract with K-12 Connect and provide guaranteed tutors for students in their schools. If you are a school looking to partner with K-12 Connect’s Homework Help Plus or Targeted Reading Tutoring programs, please email k12connect@gvsu.edu to set up a consultation.


For Students/Families

Sessions

To cancel an appointment, email or text your tutor with at least 24 hours notice. 

Work with your tutor to set up recurring sessions. You will determine the best day/time moving forward.

To reschedule an appointment you have made with your tutor, email or text your tutor to work with them on changing your session time.

Once you are connected with a tutor, you will receive an email with your tutor’s information. You and your tutor will communicate to schedule your initial session with them. You may contact your tutor at any point before your scheduled session using the email address they provided.

At the end of your session, work with your tutor to decide whether or not you would like to set up recurring sessions. Once you have finished your tutoring session, you are all set! This being said, feedback is encouraged. To leave feedback about your session(s), start by going to your LearnToBe dashboard. You will see a list of past sessions and a button next to each session labeled “Feedback.” Click on the button to leave feedback about your session.

Account and Policies

You do not need to create multiple accounts. You can use the same email address when signing up for each student. This will allow you to have the same account where you can simply toggle between students on the left hand side of the dashboard of your account. 

If you are experiencing difficulties with signing the consent form, try using another browser. Issues are known to occur when using Internet Explorer, so make sure you are using Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or others. If you have concerns, you may reach out to k12connect@gvsu.edu.

If you have not been matched with a tutor, it is likely because there are not enough tutors available to support you in your specific grade and the subject area you need support in. Please remain patient, as new volunteer tutors will be onboarded weekly. If you have additional questions surrounding this, please email k12connect@gvsu.edu.

Unlike the 2020/21 school year that utilized Zoom, all tutoring sessions will now take place on the LearnToBe platform. You will sign up, be matched with a tutor, join sessions, and provide feedback all through this platform.

If you feel it would be beneficial to stop working with a tutor and be connected with a new one, first start by letting your current tutor know. Next, log into your LearnToBe dashboard and click the button “Release Tutor” for the tutor you no longer want to work with. You will have to provide a reason, and will be added back to the queue for a new tutor to match with you.

If you have any additional questions or concerns about the platform or a specific tutor, please email k12connect@gvsu.edu for support.

If it is seen that you’ve no-showed more than three times, all your future appointments with any current connected tutors will be canceled. Additionally, you will not be added back into the queue to be connected with another tutor. K-12 Connect values the time and energy of both students and tutors.

Content

Currently, K-12 Connect does not offer tutoring in music. As for language, the program currently offers tutoring for Spanish, as well as has tutors available for German, French, and Chinese. Additional languages will be available as tutors indicate they are available to tutor.

Tutors will not be bringing content or curriculum to the session. Try reaching out to your teacher to see if they can provide additional materials that you can work on with your tutor.

For Tutors

Connecting with Students

Login to your LearnToBe account and view available K-12 Connect student profiles by going to the My Students tab and clicking “Meet Some Students.” Once you have found a student that matches your grade and subject preferences, you may connect with them.

Shortly after you pick up a student, both you and the student will receive an email that shares your email addresses.

1) Reach out to the parent or email contact provided. This will allow you and the student to schedule a meeting time. Visit the K-12 Connect Tutor Resource page via BlackBoard to access email templates.

2) Once you decide on a meeting time, schedule this session on LearnToBe. To do this, go to your dashboard and click on the “My Students” tab on the left hand side. Click on the Options icon left of your student’s name, and select “Create Schedule.” Input the session time and date information, and press “Create Schedule” to submit. This is important, as an email reminder will be sent to your student prior to the session.

3) From there, prepare the materials for the session (for example, if the parent sends along some homework, review the concepts). 

The LearnToBe program poses questions to students to find out what their specific needs are. A tutor can access this information when first signing up to tutor their student by clicking on the student’s profile. Tutors are encouraged to reach out to parents if they need more information about the student.

Sessions

To cancel a session, the tutor must communicate with the parent via email. For the session being missed, there’s no need to open the LearnToBe interactive room.

After five minutes, text or call the student. After 15 minutes, close the session and mark the student as a no-show. If a student has three or more missed sessions, let K-12 Connect know and we will remove them from the queue.

Volunteer tutors are required to provide at least 2 sessions per week.

If a K-12 student wishes to set up recurring sessions with you, start by (1) choosing a day/time that works for both you and the student. Once you determine the best times to meet, (2) go into your LearnToBe dashboard and select the “My Students” tab on the left hand side. Next, (3) select “Create a Schedule.” (4) Input the day and time information, and click the checkbox to indicate this will be a recurring session. (5) Hit “Create Schedule.” You may then start a tutoring session at each indicated recurring session date.

Yes! Once you have finished your session, be sure to complete the post session survey. This will allow you to make comments on your student’s progress so you can reference them later. It also verifies your hours through LearnToBe.

You can access tutorials and other tutor resources on the K-12 Connect Tutor Resource page, a google site that is linked in the K-12 Connect BlackBoard onboarding site. You may bookmark this google site to refer back to.

 

Verification

To have your service hours verified, you may submit a service hour verification request. Once your hours are verified by a K-12 Connect specialist, you will receive an email with a signed certificate to use as proof of participation in the K-12 Connect program.

To receive a certificate of completion for your time in the TRT program, email k12connect@gvsu.edu and include the start and end dates with which you participated in the TRT program.
