Internship Supervisor Responsibilities (Must be a current IT professional in an accepted internship program)

  • Manage Internship job posting.
  • Get approval of job description changes from the appropriate GVSU program:
  • Post job within Handshake, the GVSU career resource tool.
  • Notify appropriate internship coordinator and Career Center of the job posting.
  • Conduct interview process.
  • Selection of student intern.
  • Pre-Onboarding tasks, request assistance from Elizabeth Joyce.
    • Secure hardware and software needs.  Dedicated laptops will be available for internship needs.  Software may have to be purchased based on the need.
    • Secure working environment.  Onsite location or remote work if allowed.
    • Secure IT Internship phone extension. Three internship accounts will be set up for this purpose.
    • Determine payroll process to be followed.
  • Onboarding student intern.
    • Review and require a signature for IT confidentiality statement.
    • Introductions to other IT staff that may be involved in the project.
    • Outline job tasks and expectations for internship duration.
    • Discuss work environment, schedule, and tools.
    • Discuss payroll processing.
    • Discuss expectations if work schedule changes, sick time, etc.
    • Discuss learning goals, objectives, and outcomes.
    • Set milestones for the project.
  • Provide supervision and mentorship.
  • Provide weekly checkpoints with interns giving guidance, assignments, and feedback on performance.
  • Provide required evaluation and feedback at end of the internship to Career Services.
  • Facilitate and schedule an exit interview with each IT Senior Leadership member and the intern.
  • Create a short 1-2 minute video highlighting the internship's experience for the website.  If a video cannot be made, a short paragraph from the intern could also be highlighted on the website.
