Tragedy in New Zealand

March 15, 2019

Dear Campus Community,

Our hearts ache for the Muslim community in Christchurch and for the Muslim community at Grand Valley. To our Muslim Lakers, know that this university stands with you. Our thoughts go to all that have been impacted by this senseless tragedy. It is even more heartbreaking that this happened to people worshiping together during Jummah prayers. While this did not happen in the United States or at a college campus, we know that this impacts our community.

As has been reiterated time and time again, Grand Valley State University recognizes the responsibility we have to speak out against efforts that attempt to divide and/or target people based on identity. We condemn these acts as reprehensible and contrary to the values of this country and this campus. We unapologetically educate to interrupt intolerance and address hate when it shows up as acts of intimidation and violence.

Resources and support are available through the Division of Inclusion and Equity, Campus Interfaith Resources, and the University Counseling Center (UCC). The UCC is available at (616) 331-3266. Interfaith Services Coordinator, Kevin McIntosh, is available to connect anyone in need of support or resources. Kevin can be reached by phone at (616) 331-3207 or by email at [email protected].
