Jim and Donna Brooks honored with Grand Stewards Award

When the Grand Valley University Foundation (GVUF) began forming in 1963, local leaders Richard Gillett, Keith Baker and Philip Buchen had a shared goal: to build a network of philanthropic support for a young institution in Allendale.

From the start, GVUF was designed to connect the university with the broader West Michigan community. Early philanthropic efforts helped secure land, develop infrastructure, and invest in academic programs and scholarships, laying the groundwork for what would become a rapidly growing university. As Grand Valley expanded its reach across the region, the foundation also grew, strengthening its leadership, expanding its board and driving campaigns that brought critical private support.

Jim and Donna Brooks, who served as GVUF co-chairs for more than a decade, are among the people who have helped shape its legacy. Their leadership has been rooted in a belief that meaningful change happens when people come together, ideas are shared, partnerships formed and communities invest in one another.

In recognition of their lasting impact on Grand Valley, Dan and Pamella DeVos presented Jim and Donna with the Grand Stewards Award at the university’s 50th anniversary Enrichment Dinner. Held every two years, the event brings together donors and university leaders to celebrate the philanthropic support that strengthens and sustains GVSU. The Grand Stewards Award recognizes individuals whose leadership, service and generosity exemplify the highest level of commitment to Grand Valley.

Careers rooted in leadership and service

Early in his career, Jim helped lead a major transformation at his family’s beverage business, expanding from Brooks Beverages into Squirt & Company and then Beverage America, which became one of the largest privately owned soft drink companies in the country. Later, he turned his focus to real estate development and investment and opened a family office with his son.

For Donna, serving others has always been central to both her professional and personal life. She began her career as a registered dietitian, working with families through Holland Hospital and private practice, and then applied her expertise in meaningful ways while raising their family. Donna also became deeply involved in community and nonprofit leadership, dedicating her time to organizations focused on education, family services and the arts, including serving on GVSU’s Board of Trustees for two terms. She is an honorary life member of the board.

A legacy of philanthropy and community impact

Jim and Donna have been deeply engaged in philanthropic and civic efforts throughout West Michigan. Through their involvement with organizations like the Community Foundation Holland/Zeeland, they have supported initiatives focused on education, economic development, environmental sustainability, social justice and the arts. Their commitment reflects a broader vision: building strong, connected communities where opportunities can grow and thrive for generations.

The Grand Stewards Award reflects not only their years of leadership but also the meaningful difference they have made in strengthening both Grand Valley and the broader community.

President Philomena V. Mantella thanked Jim and Donna for their years of service.

“Your legacy is not simply written in what you have given, but in what you have made possible,” Mantella said. “It is woven into the lives of our students, into the strength of this university and into the vitality of West Michigan. You embody what it means to be Lakers for a Lifetime; not just in spirit, but in action.”
