University Address: Mantella charts path for growth, innovation and impact

President Philomena V. Mantella delivered the annual University Address August 22 that outlined strategies to expand Grand Valley's reach by building on its foundation and continuing to focus on its people and mission.

Speaking in the Louis Armstrong Theatre inside the Haas Center for Performing Arts on the Valley Campus, Mantella acknowledged current political and economic challenges that, she said, "strike at the heart of higher education’s promise."

"My hope is what you see is a university that is upholding its values, prioritizing safety and support and focusing on our mission," Mantella said. "The bottom line is we are actively navigating situations, all while staying relevant and seeking to make a broader impact."

She also noted that enrollment for this academic year will likely meet projections, including achieving the goal of a 1% increase. The retention rate from first-year to sophomore year has increased 1.4%. Mantella said 288 new faculty and staff have been hired to support those learners.

Maintaining low tuition rates, providing high returns for GVSU graduates and meeting workforce demands remain important university values, Mantella said, adding that the campus community must continue to show innovation to remain competitive.

"Is higher education worth it? At GVSU, the answer is yes and we can prove it," she said. "Strong employment outcomes and Michigan retention, along with extended reach, allow us to live into our purpose, but we must continue to innovate."

Strategies like capitalizing on the power of the university's ecosystems and its power of place will help expand its reach, Mantella said. Blue Dot will catalyze local opportunity while anchoring digital fluency, innovation and partnerships. The Omni network of community colleges and organizations helps to bring a Grand Valley education to residents who "can't come to us," she said.

Mantella said Reach Higher Together, the university's strategic plan, aligns with the academic vision and provides a roadmap to what will be an expanded footprint. She thanked the 7,500 campus community members who contributed more than 31,000 comments during listening sessions and meetings.

"Our mindset is our secret weapon," she said. "We are a keystone institution and keystones do not only anchor ecosystems, they help to activate them."
