GVSU community celebrates life of Michael Ellis

Grand Valley leaders and others in West Michigan are celebrating the life of Michael Ellis, who died on May 29, 2025. He was 63 years old.

Ellis grew up in East Grand Rapids and learned from his father how important GVSU was to the community. Mike then got involved with the university at a young age and led with passion as he supported students in their academic and athletic pursuits.

Ellis made a lasting impact at Grand Valley through his service as ambassador to the Grand Valley University Foundation and as a member of the Shaping Our Future Community Advisory Committee. His philanthropic support ranged from scholarships to capital projects, including the Men’s and Women’s Golf Indoor Practice Facility and Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall.

"Mike’s decades-long support of Grand Valley will touch the lives of our students for generations to come,” said President Philomena V. We are deeply grateful for the lives he touched and inspired, and his legacy will live on in countless ways at GVSU.”

In 1991, Ellis was named president of his family’s business, Ellis Parking Company, and played a vital role in its growth. Ellis Parking now operates more than 40 parking facilities in West Michigan and is the top provider of valet parking services in the region.

Ellis was instrumental in giving back to the West Michigan community. He advocated for the development and growth of downtown Grand Rapids. He also served as board chair of the Grand Rapids Art Museum, an executive committee member for the Grand Rapids Symphony, president of the St. George Church Parish Council, and treasurer of the Corewell Health Foundation West Michigan Board of Trustees.
